New NAB Scholar to study WIZO Programs for Children at Risk

The nab Yachad Scholarship Fund is delighted to announce its next Scholar is Dr. Helen Milroy, the Director of the Centre for Aboriginal Medical and Dental Health at the University of Western Australia.

Dr. Milroy, a child psychiatrist, will travel to Israel at the end of October to undertake her Yachad program investigating Women's International Zionist Organisation (WIZO) programs designed to help children at risk. Dr Milroy will also investigate Israeli approaches to redressing the impact and effects of childhood trauma.

Dr. Milroy is the National Australia Bank's 36th Yachad Scholar and the 3rd to be designated as an nab WIZO Yachad Scholar. Dr. Milroy's Scholarship follows that of Marie Hammer from Monash University's Faculty of Education, who spent time in Israel in 2004 investigating Israeli approaches to social-emotional development in early childhood and also that of Nina Levin who, in 2008 as the then Program Manager of Eastern Early Childhood Services for Connections Uniting Care in Melbourne, conducted an intensive investigation into approaches to social and emotional competence in early childhood development in Israel.

Kylie Charlton, Managing Director of Unitus Capital and 2010 Social Investment Fellow at the Centre for Social Impact, Sydney University, ill travel to Israel this November to engage with Not for Profit Organisations and the Israeli NGO sector to share and develop ideas and new approaches to attracting funding and capital to increase organisational capacity in assisting communities in need in Australia, Israel and elsewhere.

Dr. Anna Lavelle - the 2010 NAB Australia Israel Chamber of Commerce Yachad Scholar

Dr. Anna Lavelle, Chair of AusBiotech, the national roof body for the biomedical community in Australia travelled to Israel this May.

As the Fund’s 33rd Scholar, partnered with the Australia Israel Chamber of Commerce communal organisation, Dr. Lavelle undertook an intensive 2 week program investigating key aspects of the Israeli biotechnology industry with the aim of identifying potential lessons for Australia and to also build relationships for the future benefit of both the Australian and Israeli biotechnology industries.

Dr. Lavelle’s program looked at Israeli Government policies, including industry policy, relevant to biotechnology and also looked at Israeli capability and capacity building and innovation programs for the industry.

The Yachad program designed for Dr. Lavelle also provided an overview of the Israeli biopharmaceutical industry, with insights into Israeli investment strategies for assisting local companies - such as angel and venture capital investors, as well as strategies aimed at encouraging foreign direct investment.

Yachad Scholars Steve and Marion Isham send greetings from Israel

New Scholars for 2009

Steve and Marion Isham

The Yachad Fund’s first Tasmanian Scholars are Steve and Marion Isham who write and illustrate educational books for young readers.

The Ishams will undertake their Yachad Scholarship program this October and will be gathering material for their next publication.

This new book, to be published following their return to Australia, will explore and celebrate aspects of the longstanding friendship and connection between Australia and Israel.

The book will cover several themes including archeology and the history of the Australian Light Horse in Beersheba in 1917.

Senator Mitch Fifield

nab Jewish Care Victoria Yachad Scholar

The Federal Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities, Carers and the Voluntary Sector, and Senator for Victoria, Senator Mitch Fifield became the Yachad Fund’s 30th Scholar earlier this year.

Senator Fifield travelled to Israel in July to investigate Israeli approaches to assisting people with special needs, their families and caregivers.

As well as investigating areas of direct relevance to his shadow portfolio, Senator Fifield’s Yachad program provided opportunities to visit some of the Israeli NGO’s specializing in working with children at risk.

Senator Fifield is an Ambassador for the not-for-profit school music organization, The Song Room, and is also a member of the Yachad Accelerated Learning Project (YALP) Advisory Board. Senator Fifield wished to learn more about Israeli educational approaches that use music, sport and other such informal methods to assist children at risk.
